Instrumentation - Evaporation Substation
Evaporation Pan: non-corrosive metal (Monel); 4"
(10.16 cm) in diameter; 10" (25.4cm) in
depth (commonly filled with agricultural water to a depth of 9" (22.86cm) to avoid
wind splash out); placed upon a steel frame.
Evaporation Pan Water Statistics (when pan is filled to 9" (22.86 cm)):
Pan volume = 7,809.5623" (19,836.288242 cm) of water = 1.04723" (2.659964 cm) of
water = 7.833 gallons (29.651131 liters) of water = 65.345 lbs. (29.640492 kg)
of water.
The substation consists of the evaporation pan, cup anemometer, Six's
thermometers, copper still well, and hook gauge micrometer. The pan is cleaned at least once a month.
The best method of measurement is to keep pan filled at same level each day,
recording water lost to evaporation each time since keeping pan filled to
same level makes for a better control of water temperature.
