Instrumentation - Soil sensor & Gauge

Beneath the weather shelter is a box protecting the soil temperature gauge from direct solar radiation. The temperature tube rising into the weather shelter unit is insulated to avoid false readings. The soil temperature probe is set 20 mm into the ground. The probe consists of a platinum bulb.

Temperature recorded is indicated on a dial gauge within the weather shelter (shown in above photo).

Our station has a second soil sensor located near our automated station. To protect sensor from damage, a small fence surrounds the area where the sensor is buried. This second sensor is also buried to a depth of 20 mm. This second sensor records soil temperatures every hour and records this data to this website. See our Current & Hourly Data link.
